You’ve picked your dress, your shoes, your jewelry, your something blue, your hairdo and make up all in cruelty-free style… but what about your pretty nails? It may surprise you, but conventional nail polish brands aren’t vegan. What are the ingredients that don’t make them vegan friendly? Watch out for:

GUANINE, for example, is derived from fish scales and acids that are located in the animal tissue. It gives a pearl, glitter or shimmer effect to nail polish.

CARMINE is to watch out for especially in red colored nail polished. That rich hue is obtained by crushing beetles and boiling them (ugh!)

OLEIC ACID comes from animal fat and (like with food preparation) it’s used as a thickening solution.

The future is bright though. As the vegan beauty market keeps growing, so do the options for vegan nail polish.  Below are just a few,  in 5 beautiful bridal friendly shades!

PACIFICA

This Oregon based vegan beauty brand is one of my favorites (I conveniently buy their products at my local California Whole Foods) but it’s just available to US and Canada for online orders.

This clear matte top coat goes on smooth and stays put. Pacifica new 7 Free Nail Polish is long lasting and void of many chemicals that one would find in traditional nail polish. Plus they have added a custom wide 100% vegan brush for easier application.

GABRIEL

Another of my go-to vegan brands (also distributed at Whole Foods). Gabriel products offer consumers earth conscious and ethical options to their beauty needs. All products are made from 100% natural ingredients with no synthetic chemicals or animal by-products.

The shade I chose for you is Duvet, but the link unfortunately won’t take you directly to that particular color, but rather to a general page showcasing Gabriel Nail Collection spanning over 50 shades. You can pick what you like best of course, but if you do like the Duvet shade, it’s the 4th down on the third row. All the shades are gluten free, and free of formaldehyde, toluene, DBP, camphor, formaldehyde resin, xylene, parabens, fragrances and phthalates. Liquid nail polish remover also available on their website.

A feminist and independent spirit since she could remember (her childhood heroines were Pippi Longstockings and Katharine Hepburn) Daniela Degrassi found her creative outlet as a lifestyle photographer, working mainly in Northern California where she lived for 15 years before moving back to her native Italy to continue to be her autistic sister’s primary caregiver. Vegan since 2014, she found a perfect way to carry her message of compassion while celebrating her love for the wedding industry launching The Kind Bride in February 2018.
