One of the strongest beauty trends of this year is full, thick eyebrows. For Harper Bazaar Magazine power brows turned into the new lipstick. With the help of Social Media this trend is stronger than ever now. Compare how brow trends have changed from 1920s to the present day in this illuminating article on Vogue.

The power brow intrigued even yours truly, always quite reluctant to any beauty treatments involving needles! As my luck would have it, I reconnected with wedding industry friend Jasmine Suchoski, an ultra talented make up artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Jasmine has now turned into a brow magician and runs Yas Brow Artistry. I couldn’t resist when she tempted me to fix my somewhat asymmetrical brows. But how does she create beautiful full brows? Let’s find out in this one on one chat with Jasmine.

Jasmine, you had a long and successful career as a make-up artist. Why the transition to microblading?

When I was doing make-up working for MAC Cosmetics and starting my own freelance make-up company I was in my 20s. I had more time and can be more creative with my make-up and my client’s make-up. Now I am a busy working mom to my 5 year-old and I can’t afford to put on a full face of make-up. I was always interested in getting my brows microbladed by was hesitant because it sounded so permanent. PLUS IT WAS MY FACE. When I finally found the courage and the artist that I could trust to do my microblading, I TOOK THE PLUNGE. Not only did this spark my interested to get my license, it was life changing. I saved so much time. I had brows in my sleep, at the gym, in the pool! If I didn’t have time for anything else, my brows were always present and brows act to frame the eyes and highlight your best features.

What is microblading and is it vegan-friendly?

Microblading is the process of delicately implanting pigment beneath the surface of the skin by using sterile, disposable, tiny hand needles to create the appearance of hair strokes. Traditional tattoos use a machine, however the microblading tool is guided by the pressure and technique of the artist’s hand and can create crisp thin lines or “hair strokes” that simulate actual strands of hair. I use Tina Davies which is Vegan- friendly and cruelty-free.

If a bride is considering reshaping her brows, how long before the wedding do you advice doing the procedure?

I advise getting your brows microbladed at least 2 months prior to your wedding. It takes about 4-6 weeks for brows to heal completely. I highly recommend scheduling a perfecting session after your 4-6 week healing mark because this is when your artist will make any adjustments, fill in some color and totally perfect your brows. The session in total took about a 1.5 hour.

Follow Yas Brow Artistry Instagram profile for lots of before and after examples.

You also offer other services like lip blushing. What is that exactly? Is it vegan as well?

Semi-permanent lip blush treatment enhances the natural shape of your lips, giving them that boost of vitality and color. It is an extremely popular semi-permanent make up treatment providing a flush of color as well as defining the lip contours. This is done by a machine and with a different pigment which is vegan and cruelty-free.

How long before the wedding do you advice doing the lip blushing procedure?

I advise getting your lips tinted at least 1.5 month prior to your wedding. It takes about 6 weeks for lips to heal completely. I highly recommend scheduling a perfecting session after your 8 weeks after healing because this is when your artist will make any adjustments, fill in some color and totally perfect your lip color and shape. The session in total took about a 1.5 hour.

Lots of men suffer from premature alopecia, but you can help them with Scalp Micropigmentation. Can you explain how that works?

I will start using Folicule which is Vegan and Cruelty-free. Scalp MicroPigmentation for Alopecia and other scalp conditions can help to conceal and cover issues with this type of hair loss. While there are no cures for Alopecia Arreata and Alopecia Universalis, the treatment can provide some effective relief from the visual signs of this type of hair loss. Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a process that uses micro-needles to “tattoo” pigment into the scalp. It creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles to restore the look of a fuller head of hair. The procedure replicates your natural hair follicles while strengthening and adding density to thinning areas.

What other services do you use that vegan brides can find helpful?

Since my background is in cosmetics, I still offer make-up services tailored to each bride. If I do get requests from a Vegan bride I am all equipped with vegan products. The Vegan cosmetic industry is growing and there are many make up lines to choose from. It’s great to service brides who are conscious of our environment and of what they’re putting into their bodies. It starts from the surface ☺

Thank you Jasmine!

As for my experience with microblading, I first met Jasmine for a consultation where she took a few measurements to figure out how my natural brow shape should be. Then she drew with a special pencil the shape my new brows would look like after the procedure.  Having always preferred thin brows, I thought I would feel weird to see my reshaped thick brows, but I happened to like my new look right away. I simply loved how they shaped my face making it more defined.

So I couldn’t really wait for my actual procedure. I did not feel much pain at all, just a ping here and there. I felt very comfortable throughout because Jasmine explained each step of the way what was happening in her soothing voice. Below is the result after our session. I did not retouch the photo in any way, and you can clearly see I wasn’t wearing any make up for the procedure. My new brows look so natural!!!

Curious about microblading? Jasmine will be happy to answer any question you may have through her social media channels and she welcomes you (by appointment only) in her Fremont studio.
