Over the last decade, at least a handful of reality TV shows have cropped up showing engaged women searching for the perfect gown (or pant suit or jumpsuit or cocktail dress, for that matter). But as much as we love following brides along on their journeys, we often neglect the other important women involved in the big day. Mothers of the bride and groom, for example, have a lot more modern opportunities today to look just as terrific—with their own unique styles and without overshadowing the stars of the show.
Black with a twist
For a mom who likes black, but wants a little pizzazz, a conservative top portion with full print skirt – like this Eliza J polyester-elastane option – provides the best of both worlds. Straps and a square neckline also offer more coverage, while an A-line or ball gown bottom simultaneously adds chic volume while flattering both a pear shape or creating curves on a more slender shape.
Feminine and fabulous
Embroidery and tulle are ultra feminine and fun, but some may think the trend is too “young”. An option like this Adrianna Papell polyester-nylon dress with sleeves, however, is an elevated and mature version that tones down the decals. Plus, the fit-and-flare shape works equally beautifully on women who want to create more curves, and women who wants to show theirs off.
Dusty blue—unofficially added to the modernized list of neutral wedding color options—has become a big-time favorite because it tends to fall somewhere in the grey family, yet is more exciting than basic black and flattering on almost every skin tone. The off-the-shoulder neckline on this BHLDN gown, combined with the polyester-satin skirt is fun, yet chic and age-appropriate.
Classic and timeless
Mothers of the bride or groom who feel more comfortable in darker colours, and may just want to stay in their comfort zone, certainly don’t have to sacrifice a standout gown. In fact, Vince Camuto arguably made this polyester number especially to satisfy that band of women. With more arm coverage, a unique asymmetrical neck, and a defined waist, who says simple can’t still stun?
Neutral, never boring
Soft neutrals like blush and nude, and metallics like silver and gold, have long been popular for a reason. For summer occasions in particular, the look is effortless and feminine for moms whose style is a little more understated. This polyester Calvin Klein dress features an off-the-shoulder neckline to show off your neck, collar bones, and shoulders, and flattering ruching along the side.
